Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Champion 2007
"I was born and brought up in Lake Gardens (Calcutta). We have a house there. Schooling, music, sports activities, friendship -- all began there. My father is in a medical profession. He is a psychologist and my mother is a housewife. We belong to a joint family. The family have all kinds of professionals like a doctor, engineer, scientist etc. Since my childhood, I have yearned for music."
Tell me about your childhood. Where and how did you spend your childhood?
I was born and brought up in Lake Gardens (Calcutta). We have a house there. Schooling, music, sports activities,friendship--all began there. My father is in a medical profession. He is a psychologist and my mother is a housewife. We belong to a joint family. The family have all kinds of professionals like a doctor, engineer, scientist etc. Since my childhood, I have yearned for music. While my mother sang, I used to listen to her. In fact, my mother started to train me with harmonium as I was growing up. It was somewhat a regular and formal training. At that time my family was facing some problems. Still, I would like to say that I struggled a lot to establish myself as a singer. Truly speaking I started singing from childhood. To get the training I used to meet many people. I learnt Rabindra Sangeet from Mr Pramit Sen, the son of late Sagar Sen, an eminent singer of Rabindra Sangeet. In our locality, Mr Sudeep Roy, a disciple of late Manabendra Mukherjee( great singer of yesteryear) stays. He loves me very much and trained me with the songs of late Manabendra Mukherjee, Late Shyamal Mitra and Manna De(all great singers) Mr Sen trained me also in Mr.Manna De's Classical Songs. At present, I am getting training from Mr.Jayanta Sarkar. From him, I am learning classical music. When I get chance I meet Mr Ajay Chakraborty to get a few tips.He also loves very much. I call him uncle. Just I wish to meet Ostad Rashid Khan for once.
You've not met him yet!
It has not happened yet. I have met all the people I love except Ustad Rashid Khan. Anyway, I attended different competitions. I was a student of Nava Nalanda. The school used to organize Nalandasree Competition. I always joined that and I used to achieve the top position every year and got Nalandrasree Award. Besides these, I used to participate in the competitions organised by Tollywood and TV Channels. I used to be among top three positions.Sometimes I got eliminated too. One such competition was presented by Zee Bangla and produced by Prime Music. It was named Zee Bangla Golden Voice. Mr Mithun Chakraborty was the anchor. There I could not proceed much. I was eliminated out of the top eight. My parents were hurt very much.Naturally grandparents also got hurt. But I was not upset at all and hoped and waited for better. Actually many incidents may happen in your life. Just one and a half month passed away and I saw the advertisement of Zee Bangla Sa-re-ga-ma-pa. This is a great event. You know among all the competitions its vastness surpasses others. Its name implies its creativity. The brand of the singers too is the reason for its vastness. At once I applied to join and gave audition. Competition started. You saw Debajitda was anchor and with the blessings of Almighty I was among top three competitors. And at last I became the champion. After that I was told, for Sa-re-ga-ma-pa you are directly promoted to "Vishvayudha" --(the name of the show as participants across the world joined it.) Still I remember the affection of Mr. Rajeeb Chatterjee, the Business Manager of Zee. He had told me I must win. I assured him that I would try my level best. It was a time of my life. I was called to Mumbai for the competition. In Calcutta I have to appear for My HS(+2) final examination. I requested my father to let me go to Mumbai.I promised him that I would be the champion and I would secure 60% in the examination. For, I did not hope to better than this in the examination which was very tough. But my father was a bit pessimist. He said that a small fry like me would be lost in the vast ocean. I again requested my father to allow me to go to Mumbai to take a chance and try. Besides these I knew that I was one year ahead agewise to appear for HS Final Examination. Taking everything into consideration I thought that if anything went wrong it could be adjusted.(with a smile). You can say thus I made myself tension-free. Then I bought three two-way tickets for Calcutta-Mumbai flight. Thus I planned to appear for Physics,Chemistry and Mathematics examination papers. Went to Mumbai and would return to Calcutta.on the eve of the exam. day and I would fly back in the next afternoon. However I had to stay at Mumbai for two months. One day I was just taken to Brahmashastra(name of a round in the competition). But was greeted by Ismailji in a sarcastic way. He wondered how come I got chance in this Vishwayudha! Anyway, thank God, got a chance to sing. After that I progressed gradually to top four, then to top three. The Zee management took the decision to choose the champion among top three, not between top two.According to them we three: Amanat,Aneek and Raja are all good singers but of different style. With everybody's blessings I became....
How are you doing in St.Xaviers' College? Are you still carrying on?
Aneek: I could not continue as I had a problem with my attendance. I could not attend a single class. Just attended a fest there.
How do you get the inspiration to compete in the reality show? Hope it is from your family.
You know the support from the family is most important. To establish and succeed the support of one's family is essential.I think myself zero without my family support. I belong to a joint family. In fact, my uncle, parent and aunt all gave me the support. My uncle bought me a synthesizer and a sound system so that I can improve in Music. This kind of gesture from the family make you feel lucky.
The inclusion of and Avijit Kosambee and you in the "Brhmashastra Round" raised a huge controversy. leave alone Mr.Darbar, even your mentor Himesh too questioned your inclusion. Feel you were afraid of not getting a chance.
Look Mr.Ismail Darbar is a legend. It was my first entry and it was an awesome feeling to meet personalities like Himesh Reshmiya, Vishal-Shekhar, Bappida. I was afraid that there might be a possibility, say one in hundred; not to get a chance to enter. I told my fellow competitor Adi to take care of me. He told me not to be tense and everything would be okay.At that time we were on the stage. At last Himeshji requested Ismailji to let me sing. I sang "in Dino.." and the journey started.
Maadhukari: Afterwards we observed that Himesh became a great fan of your songs. You too told him "I love You" ecstatically. Is this the magic of your songs or the credit of the organizers?
Fine, you have raised the issue. I would like to tell you that not only I am the student of Himeshji but also I am a great fan of him. Still, I remember an incident. I was in Golden Voice and I was not as famous as I am now. Then he came to Nicco Park to perform and we mean the Golden Voice was to perform there. We were ten. In the program the last big name was Himeshji. He would come early and leave after his performance. But I came to learn that Himeshji had come and found him in the green room. Still, it made me laugh. I found Himeshji was moving here and there and two of his security guards were shadowing him with arms in their hands.
Perhaps at that time, he was under some threat.
Celebrities always face some kind of danger. As I went to meet him his security person threatened me with dire consequence.I was hurt. But on that day itself, I promised myself that one day I would embrace him in front of his guard. On the day of the final Akshaykumar declared my name as Champion and instantly I embraced him and said: "I love you, sir." And I felt a peace of mind. The viewers did not know these and thought that Aneek did not thank them. But now you know that situation had an old story behind.
In fact, I meet you for this. Do you think that could the good singers like you get this much popularity if there were not the reality show? I feel you owe your achievement to these organizers.
Definitely reality show will not make one a star. Only one's hard work and luck can make one a star. For amateur talents like us, they give a background. I am Aneek and a singer. You think I sing well. They have created a passion in the world. The credit goes to them as they made it possible to project us among the viewers of 132 countries. All the viewers know us. In fact, USA, UK and Canada all are related to India. But, I was really shocked when went to Israel and Kuwait and found that people there also watched our shows. Truly speaking they are literally crying when we're leaving the country. I am very much grateful to Zee for giving me a beautiful platform. Now it depends upon one's own effort. I mean to say to improve the enrichment of my voice and to place myself. I have to keep the public relations. I think all these are primary criteria for success.
May I ask you when you were singing "Jaane keya chaahe man" of "Pyar ke side effect, "you told actor Diya Mirza flirtingly "I love you Diya. Do you love me?" Is this required to exist in the race?
In fact, I was not taught these sort of things. Not even taught by Sa-re-ga-ma-pa people. In fact, Himeshji once aids me that he had not trained me with these sort of stuff. I said him I had seen you, Vineet to make masti in the show of 2005. Then I thought given a chance I would also make some sort of masti. So always made some masti after finishing my song. It may be Diya, Shahrukh or Salman.
Were these pre-planned?
Not at all. It was mere spontaneous. People among the audience and the members of the staff of Zee would love me because of this. So I said those to Diya directly without thinking about the circumstances.
You sang "O, O Jane Na". While I was singing all of a sudden Salman Khan took off your shirt. People say Salman is used to this sort of craziness. Weren't you stunned? How did you control the situation?
It was Salman Khan. If now he took off my shirt, it does not matter. But during the live show this kind of action would make a hype, I thought. for, Salman took off my shirt, He is a bigshot and for him I am nobody. So, I like the attitude of Salman Khan. I like him very much. I also like his angry man attitude. He has got something rather a macho-like thing. For this, I am a fan of Salman Khan.
embarrassed you were a bit Found that you had tackled the situation nicely. But initially.
At first, I was shocked. Thank God and thanks to my parents.Their blessings made it possible to carry on singing.Hardly anybody can sing in that situation. In front of all the audience, I was half-nude. There were women as well men among the audience. I controlled myself and told myself to think that I was dressed. I told myself not to be nervous and weak. I gained these experiences which had built my mental strength. In my tender days when I attended functions, any adverse comment would make me sad. Became nervous and weak. There, I decided not to be nervous and weak in any situation. I had this sort of determination within me and I controlled myself and began to sing again.
You got 5 million rupees in cash and a Chevy Spark! Anything more?
Aneek: Besides these (with a pause), look I did not achieve these things. Because anybody can make money and cars. My ambition was the popularity among people. I would tell my mother to note how much I had to slog to reach here. Since my tender age I have been singing and that results in getting the chance to participate in this competition like Sa-re-ga=ma-pa. I know money, cars etc are essential. Money is very much essential in life. To live in metros like Mumbai or Calcutta car is very much essential. To establish oneself these things are required. Above all the fame is more important. People will know me as "Aneek Dhar" and love me---it was my aspiration. I had a dream that people would meet me and take my interview. To me, the album of mine is a great achievement. I meant to say the album, the exposure to the industry was my aim. I have made it possible with the blessings of God. I must be very much grateful to God.
How did you prepare yourself for the competition? What you did when you were into that? how did you spend the whole day?
I had to put in much labour. I worked hard. I kept my all my labour and hard work within myself as I did not want any sympathetic opinion about my performance. I feel I was the most hard-working challenger in the competition. In fact, I can prove it. I knew nine of us: Raja Aamanat, Mauli, Sumedha, Harpreet, Juned, Musharraf and Punam are know to the viewers. We would check the tracks. Track means minus one.(one has to sing with the recorded music) On that, we would sing on the stage. In the beginning, I would check the tracks to listen to my tracks. Nobody else would do that. I visited the place where the tracks were made. I would sit with Mr Sanjay Vidyarthi who was monitoring the tracks. If required I would say to him to change the tone guitar or the string or the tone of the bass guitar. My fellows followed it and they began to check the tracks. I won't disturb anybody. Everybody used to work till four in the morning. Just imagine we had to go to the studio at eight in the morning for the shooting and everybody was working on the tracks. At four o'clock in the morning, everybody except me left the place by car. I would still sit with Sanjayji and that was about six in the morning. I made the track whole night.
Did you do so?
I was preparing the track with Sanjayji. At about six in the morning, I would go the flat where I stayed. Then I won't be helped with a car for I was a mere participant. Within seven I would go the studio. No food, no sleep or rest within last 24 hours. You viewed the show in two episodes; Friday and Saturday. But the shooting was done in a single day. The shooting of Friday's' episode was done in the morning and we remained a bit fresh. But the night shooting was tedious. I tried my best to store my energy for that. For these, I claim myself the most hardworking participant.
Actually, People were not aware of these...
Yea, how could they know!
Once I got the chance to speak to Karunia, the finalist of Indian Idol. He said that he had to slog. He could sleep for four to five hours in a day. Didn't you face such sort of stress situation?
The stress was a great factor. If you can't sleep your voice, mindset, the mood will be affected. Lots of things matter. Under the situation the rest and sleep become secondary. In fact, priority differs. Within you, the desire to perform excellently becomes utmost important. And, I always wanted this.
"Yes, he caressed my cheek and said"My dear son, you sing very well and you are already the winner. Pray God you be the champion." These words matter great for me."
How was it possible to carry on without any rest?
It would not. But you had to carry on. I took this as a responsibility. Just I was determined that I was in, I must win. But I always tried to perform well. I readied myself to give my best without the concern for the result. I think everybody possesses this kind of fighting spirit. In case you go to perform this determination will be there. Without this nobody can achieve. You must have the spirit to fight.
You had spent time with the famous musicians like Himeshji, Ismailji, Bishal-Sekhar and Bappi Lahiri and sang songs composed by them. Did you learn anything which will be helpful to you in future?
Where else could I learn? Himeshji, Ismailji, Vishal-Sekhar, Bappida all are great figures in the industry. If they wish you with a few words, you can learn something from that.
What's about the technicality?
I got many tips from them. Vishalji told me "you will be the number one singer in the industry. The Industry wants technical singer like you. You perform like Sonu. On the stage, You are exuberant like Sonu. You are the one who sings a tune properly." Bappida told me " You are Bengali, I am proud of it." Ismailji uttered "Pray God you may be the winner". About Himeshji, I must say he is father-like. Their love had taught me many things which I can't express in words. I hope you will understand that I have learnt a few things when my album will be released.
Before the final, you told that musically Aamanat should win, but Raja may win with the people's vote. But you did not predict anything about yourself. why? weren't you confident.?
Yes, I had confidence in myself. But I can't predict about myself. In fact, I do not believe in prediction or assumption. Rather I can't depend upon those. I always believe where there is a will there is a way. God blessed me to be among the top three challengers. It indicated there was something in my destiny, in my fate. I always loved my fellows. I have respect for others, Heaven knows what I shall get. But always I try to love others. My father always advises me to learn to love others. Aamanat, Raja both are stars. They are big in a sense. I would respect all. Whatever I feel I express.
Aaamanat frustratingly said only ten percent of the population in Pakistan accessed the Net. So, he could not get the online votes. Once he mentioned that almost all his votes came through SMS. What do you think about it?
We didn't have a clear idea about the system of the vote. The singer's job ended with his last song with an appeal to the people to vote for him. We could not know how the system functioned. Still, I feel Zee is a giant network and I hope they do their best in recording the genuine votes.I think it is better to be sure before a comment like this. For, Zee is a huge network. I have no more idea and no more to say. No idea, please.
Are you doing play-back? Are you singing in the Bengali film?
I had sung in Bengali film as well as in Hindi.
What're the names of the films?
I don't know the names of the films. Because I got the call from the music directors. In Bengal, I got the call from Mr Ashok Bhadra. I met him and a sang a song for his film. I got a call from Mr Narayan Roy and I sang two songs for him. I recorded both the songs in a single day. Mr Nawabarzu of Bombay called me and told me "My son, come here". I sang for him too. I sang one song for Bappida. But I don't know the names of the films.
Actually, the names of the films are decided later on.
Yes, you are right. They decide afterwards.
Heard that you sang in "dot com".
No, I did not sing with Sumedha. I sang with Juned to the tune of Bappida.
Once more it is relating to Aamanat. He is a lead singer of a band named " Mikalhassan". Do you have any plan to create a band of your own?
Really I don't cherish the idea. But Aaamanat is a very good singer. He may be in the band, but I don't have the intention. I shall try to establish myself as a solo singer.
It means you don't intend to join any band.
Aneek: (said no to a firm body language)
We watched the judges of Sa-re-ga-ma-pa most of the times indulged themselves in controversies. They used to start the war of words. To be frank with you I can mention the example of the differences between Anu Malik and Alisha Chinoy or the problems arising between Avijit and Bappi Lahiri. Avijit angrily told what he would discuss with him? He blamed Bappi Lahiri of his misbehaviour with RD(R D Burman) etc. You were on the stage and the environment got tense and hot. Didn't you lose the concentration?
Thank God, I faced few situations like that. Frankly speaking, I faced such a situation at the time of my entry. When Ismailji said how I got the entry. Rest of the situations are funnier than controversies. Those were related to Deepika Padukone, Diya Mirza, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar.
Really those are genuine fun, rather than controversy.
It's true those situations were not controversial. Actually, I don't know what is meant by the controversy. But I think those were not got up. Because all the judges are experienced. They had their own minds. When they gave a remark that conveyed some meaning rather inner meaning which had some sense. I don't think all those controversies were got up. Just a topic came to be discussed. On that, you had to give your opinion. Everybody wants to speak something which is better than others. You speak upon the topic very well, but I shall want to speak the better. And so on. These linger the war of words, not got up.
I don't mean getting up. I want to say when the problems or controversies arose among the judges, it affected the performance the challengers.
Yea, you're right. Ultimately success comes to those who are not affected. Because it may depress the singer. I think one should not be nervous in this kind of situation.
You are very close to Himesh. Please say a few words about Himesh as a mentor and a human being outside his profession.
He is superb, mind-blowing, fantastic and outstanding. He is emotional, an angry person who doesn't mix up with everybody. He has an ego that he is HR-- Himesh Reshmiya and established himself. I appreciate him for this spirit. I love him very much from the core of my heart. Pray God he could get more fame. He has signed five movies where he performs as a singer, music director and actor. I wish him more and more success. For me, I dream to work with him. I always pray God that I could get a chance to work with him. I love him very much and I like him very much as a human being.
You may get chance in his film if you work with him. Isn't it so?
It can't be said with certainty. You don't know your destiny, luck. Suppose I work with Himeshji in a film, but it may be a flop. But with Bishalji my songs may be hit. These things happen in the industry. There are many ups and downs. Pray God, let's hope for the best.
You told you had a dream to do playback in the film of Shahrukh Khan.
Oh! yes, it's true. Still, I tell my friends jocularly if I were a girl I would have proposed him for marriage. Just you see how much crazy I am about him. Because he is aloof from all the controversies as well as of the scandals. Just think he is a superstar but carries no scandal with him. Only he has great activities. He has opened Red Chilli Entertainment and make her wife Gouri the producer. He bought "Kolkata Knight Riders" for the IPL twenty-twenty tournament. He always acts more and talks less. In his interview I read, back home he gave company to his son and would tell her wife that he would cook for them. This points out that he knows the difference between the professional life and personal life. Who can differentiate like him become very much successful? For all these reasons I love Shahrukh.
What Shahrukh Khan about your performance? We watched he was caressing your cheek and.....
Yes, he caressed my cheek and said"My dear son, you sing very well and you are already the winner. Pray God you be the champion." These words matter great for me.
What are the future plans of yours?
The immediate plan is for the release of my album.
What is the name of your album? Is it not decided yet?
The name has not been finalised. I myself will name my album. I hope it to give a name which may satisfy the international market.
Are these Bengali songs?
No, no! all are Hindi songs. There are eight songs.
When do u you expect the release of the album?
Let's hope as soon as possible. Actually, I am very busy with the shows and my voice is not getting the proper rest which is very essential. I plan to do the album first and continue my practice. I will not stop my training. Always I pray God to get a chance for play-back in the films.
Shahrukh showed affection for you, Himesh is always full of praise for you. Within a short period of time you get all the accolades, awards and media are running after you. All these are happening fast. Don't you feel your head is turning and take pride in yourself of making something great?
(with a pause) My dear brother, have you watched those in me?
No, I haven't.
I belong to a family where my father is a psychologist and my mother is a housewife. I know myself and always want to remain as a down to earth person. Always I like myself to be close to the ground zero. For, my experience has taught me a lesson. When anybody wants to fly high beyond his capacity God just cuts his wings. These are the words from an Urdu poetry. I have got this experience from my life or other's life. People say I have made my career. To them I just say I have yet to make, I have just started. Just my first steps are in.Yes, I have the plan to step forward. But sometimes I think I have become the champion singer of Sa-re-ga-ma-pa competition. So, I should not be scolded by my parents. When I hang out with my friends in the evening, a call comes from my mother if it is late. She asks me with whom and where I am and warns me of not allowing to get into the house if I come very late. In fact, with my parents, some sort of quarrels happen, but I think these controls are good for me. I understand you can't go astray if you are under the check of your parents.
Within a short period, your bag is full of innumerable awards. For example, Jatin-Lalit talent hunt etc... But in Taza TV channel you stood second. Who got the first position?
I can't remember the name of the girl who became the winner.
After that, in the programmes of Aakash Bangla, Bhalobasi tai gai you participated.
I was second in those programmes too.
What's about the show of "E to noi shudhu gaan"?
I got the second position in all the shows. And these became blessings to me.
Now I want to know some personal thing. As much as I know about you that you are very much at ease with singing and love. About your singing, we all know. But about your love affair, Debaparna may be the best judge. Singing, love and study are the three most important factors in your life. How do you balance yourself?
I don't have that sort of relationship with the person you just named.
Isn't it so?
I am explaining the matter. Then I was in class XI. At the first sight, I liked her. I am not afraid of saying in front of my father who is sitting with me. I want to face it. I believe in spirit if you are a man accept it. I liked the girl. In fact, I offered her a boquet of the flower. She said to me that the career was the top priority. Yes, it was a good advice. But at that time I didn't understand many things, I thought when I would start my career. I would proceed further in the relation. I couldn't understand the opportunism in those. It was some sort of business. After a week or two, I found her involved with a guy. And the girl threatened her father for money otherwise she would leave her home. She would say she would do anything she liked. I felt bad. I thought about the song "Eisa sila diya tume pyaar kaa"...I then thought that I would mix up with hundreds of girls like her. At that time I was angry and so I thought like that. But now I think I won't go into any sort of affairs.
That means there was no communication.
I had that for a week. In fact, I don't have an affair until today. Because I am very much happy with my relatives, my parents and above all, I am happy with myself as Aneek Dhar
Who are your favourite musicians and singers?
Definitely, my favourite musicians are Himeshji, A R Rahman Saab and R D Burman Saab. For, I want to be a versatile singer and I want to prove my versatility. I don't think to follow anyone in particular. Rahaman Saab has the music of his variation. Himeshji---I'm just crazy about him. Then I am a great an of R D Burman Saab. Vishaal-Sekharji is doing great. All are doing great music.
What's about the singers? Except for Sonu Nigam.
I got a weakness about Sonu Nigam. He is not the only idol to me but an idea. I like some songs sang by Rahman Saab. And I also like some of the songs of Himeshji. At last, I say blindly the most favourite singers are Manna De and Sonu Nigam.
Do you listen to Bangla Band?
No, just listen to it at FM when I travel by car. That's much.
I must convey my thanks to you for giving me your time. Thank you very much.
