My unique Summer

Day 1: Leaving Home…

I had to wake up around 6:00 am-7:00 am. I did what I usually do, and I got everything ready in my backpack, Me and my family got everything ready for vacation. We went to go pick up my aunt and her bags. So we left for the airport. We had to go through security and stuff like that. We had to go find our gate number and waited for an hour. We all got on the plane we took off! We actually had to land in Santa Anna and take another plane to Seattle. When we arrived there, we stayed at “Extended Stay America”.

Day 2: Space Needle and Chihuly Garden & Glass

I and my family went to see the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington. The Space Needle is 605 feet tall! Can you imagine going 605 feet high?! Well I can, because I went all the way up to the Space Needle and we stayed up there for some time. The view was so beautiful! We saw so many tall buildings and cruise ships! Next, we went to the rotating glass floor. I was on the glass floor and my dad took pictures of me! We all souvenir shops, but do you know the ones that you can bungee jump in? Well yes, you can, because after seeing the Space Needle, we went inside the souvenir shop and they had a section where you put a VR (virtual reality) on and you are all the way at the top of the Space Needle, you get to look around for some time and you would jump in 3 seconds! It was so much fun! Then, we went to this beautiful glass museum, called Chihuly Garden & Glass. It was so beautiful and pretty! I took so many pictures and videos. In this museum, you get to see many glass creations! They also had lots outside in the garden. In the end, you get to see this mini-movie of how and who creates this beautiful work and I would recommend you to go there!

Day 3: Dinosaurs + Science!

I and my family went to this science center! When we first walked in we saw dinosaur sculptures and beautiful fountains. When we went through another door we saw real-life dinosaurs! Just kidding! Dinosaurs are extinct right now, but we saw mechanical dinosaurs, dinosaur footprints, and dinosaur fossils! Then we went down and I saw so many fun experiments to do! There was one experiment where you put the ball on the tube, and press the button and it makes it “fly”!

Day 4: Fishy smell from Farmer’s Market!

We went to Famer’s Market in Seattle. Famer’s Market is just like selling jewelry, food, fruits, paintings, and stuff like that. They also had a seafood section, which includes fish, shrimp, squid, king crab, and crab. We, well by we, I mean, my family wanted to eat some shrimp fry. I didn't eat any because I HATE SHRIMP! After some exploring, we found a man named Somen Debnath who gives bike rides and gives tours around. Turns out that he can speak Bangla like us!

Day 5: Going on the Washington Ferry!

We were on a ferry heading towards Bainbridge Island. We stopped by and drove to a beach. We stayed there for a while and I found so many pretty seashells! After some more exploring, we took the ferry back and went to the hotel.

Bridge Park! They had this big bridge that was 240 feet above the Capilano River! You also get to go on top of the treetop too! The view is so perfect! It was like a nature walk!

Day 6: Ballard Lock

We went on this cruise ship that headed toward Lake Union and went through Salmon Bay. It was just a tour from a saltwater area to a freshwater area.

Day 7: Crossing Borders?

We packed everything we needed and hit the road! We drove to the US and Canada border. When we got there, we were just asked a few questions, looked at our passports and we were off like that. When we first came to Vancouver, it kind of looked like New York City. There were so many people walking around Vancouver.

Day 8: Animals have come!

We went to the Vancouver aquarium. I recommend this to my family to go visit. I saw so many different fish, a big turtle, sea otters, penguins, sharks, sea lions, jellyfish, crocodiles, stingrays, lionfish, and butterflies. Then we head off to Stanley Park, at the beach! It was so beautiful there! I got so many seashells! Next, we went to the Capilano Suspension

Day 9: Going to an Island!

We took a ferry and went to Victoria Island. We went to British Columbia and we saw this statue erected by the people in British Columbia to the memory of “Sir James Doulas K.C.B Governor and to the “Commander-in-chief”. We went back on the ferry and headed back to the hotel.

Day 10: The Last Day…

The last place we went to was an Iskcon Hare Krishna temple. They had a statue named “Sri Sri Gaura Nitai”, except just one of them. Krishna and Ratha looked so beautiful, I just couldn't take my eyes off them! They decorated them so beautifully!

Day 11: Going Home at Last!

We had to cross the border to get to the US. in my opinion crossing to Canada is easier than crossing to the US. I am saying that because we had to go through Secondary Inspection. We had rice and 8 oranges. They took the rice away because it was made in India, they also took the 8 oranges because of the seeds. When we came back the police looked through our stuff to make sure we don't have anything else like that. After that, we headed to the airport and we flew all the way back home!

Well, I hope you guys enjoyed reading this as much as I did. I really had so much fun in Seattle and Vancouver. I really enjoyed Stanley Park the most because it was the most beautiful park I've ever seen! It also has a pretty beach!

No one screams

for ice-cream

Arista Kamila (Age 11)

Northern Ireland

No one screams

Splattered on a dusty road and my cream starts to melt,

I stare out longingly through the chaos of boots, jeans and felt,

At the luscious softies being handed out by the cheery ice-cream man,

Who, by his wake, has his side-kick, the trusty ice-cream van,

My strawberry tears have made puddles on the ground,

Some child has lost me, and now I’ll never be found!

I’m invisible to all human eyes,

Their ears are too small to hear quiet cries,

Now I’m melting and, sadly, I’m all alone!

Then, glop! I’ll be gone, all that’s left will be my cone,

No one cares about me, a fallen love out on the street,

Would you like to, every day, be trampled by hard feet?

The children lick their softies, the most yummy ones they’d ever seen,

And now you know the sad truth is, that no one screams for this ice-cream.

The girl who could fly

Beautiful. Yes, the composition, the everything; perfect. I brushed my sleek, black hair out of my eyes and continued painting. I carefully dipped my brush in the sky-blue paint and mixed it with a bit of water, let it drip for a while and stroked the canvas, making light blue lines across the board. "Wait till Sarah sees this," I said to myself, " she's gonna love it! " Then I remembered the 'incident', and the way we weren't friends anymore, and all my hopes dashed.
I talk to myself a lot, I don't know why, probably just runs in the family.
Probably not.
I think it's because I'm alone most of the time, wait, actually make that all the time. Mom has to go to work in the mornings and Dad does a work shift at night, so that means they're free the rest of the day, right? Wrong. The rest of the day Mom 's on the phone chatting to her friend about her wedding, and by wedding, I mean her friend's wedding, not Mom's.
Dad doesn't have time for me either. I'm the morning he says, "Hali, don't fret, I'm right here, ready to rumble! ", and then, as if on cue, his phone will ring, and that's the end of that. You're probably thinking, 'Hali, why don't you go see your friends?', well, the problem is that I can't. Maybe in 15 years I'll be able to, with more advanced science, but now it's impossible. You see, I was born a bit different from the others. I was born... disabled. The doctors told my parents that I had a problem with me, and that I would never be able to walk. Mom and Dad were worried and, for a while, looked after me day and night, all the mornings to every evening. The awesome attention lasted until I was about six or seven, and things went downhill fast from there.
I'd always known we were poor, the ways Mom only let me buy art stuff with her money, and Dad didn't ever give me pocket money. But THIS poor?!!! What on earth?!!! "Honey," Mom had said on that very revealing day, " dear, your daddy and I have agreed that you're getting older and it's hard getting you from place to place, so we're gonna buy you a wheelchair. "
"Mommy!!!" I had screamed, " a wheal wheelchaiw?!!! Tank you, tank you, tank you!!!!! "
So they'd bought me my wheelchair, and I'd loved it with all my heart. I was able to take it into town, and the parks, and visit friends I thought I'd never see again. I was able to go to the seaside, and capture the waves in a new piece of art. I felt free, so free, after being locked up in the stuffy cottage for years on end.
But if course, life is never so merciful.

As you can guess, my parents had to make up for the massive drop in their savings, so they started doing extra shifts. It was ok for a while, but then they'd decided it wasn't safe for them to go out and let me go where I want. So they took my beloved wheelchair seat and sold it on eBay for half the price. I dunno. What I do know is that I don't like being stuck at home.

There are days I am content with my paint and my brushes, but there are also days I wished I wasn't me.
Well, I guess it's time to introduce myself.
My name is Hali Ray and I love to draw and paint, I am 12 years old and can't walk at all, I fall down if I try. I have dark, sleek, black hair and almond shaped eyes concealing circles of deep, chestnut brown. I have a pretty rosebud mouth, a heart shaped face and brown tanned skin covering a slender stick body.
I don't sound quite interesting, do I? Well, I'm not, can't be even if I tried. But the worse part is that I'm lower than normal, way low, I'm crippled. Being crippled has ruined my life. People have faults, many not as big as the other, but to them, strangers like me don't exist. To them as I sit down, I am not there, as if I have blended into the chair itself, my colours disappearing into it's. When I line up at the lunch line, they see a girl in a wheelchair, and skip past me ahead, not even bothering to say sorry. People see the girl in the wheelchair, and think, she didn't count, I can conquer her. The fault is that they see the girl, the thing in the chair, and automatically judge me, but they do not know who I am on the inside. I am Hali. Hali Ray. The girl with the never-ending imagination.
Sometimes I close my eyes and pretend. Pretend I am free, able to do what I want. But it's not always easy. So I imagine instead of pretend. I imagine crystal white wings have sprouted out of my back, and I'm soaring way up above the clouds. So high that I am on top of the world.

My paintings take me places, places I have never been or just hope to see again. Places which light up my face, making my mouth stretch into a wide smile. Places which inspire me and feel as if they're caring for me, a sight for the sore eyes. I don't think about my paintings, I don't sketch ready outlines beforehand. When I feel that sudden electric spark inside, I rip out a canvas from my collection, put it on my desk and close my eyes.
I see I am in London, feeding the pigeons and riding the great London Eye. Then the scene suddenly shifts and I am in India, dancing in a sari or throwing coloured paints about at a festival. I open my eyes and picture the scene I want to paint on my canvas, and I glide my brush across the smooth board. Mostly, I use pastel paints or watercolours to create my masterpieces, and I use small detailed brushes for the delicate strokes. In my paintings I am free, the girl no longer in the wheelchair, but the girl who can fly. The girl who can dream and believe and can imagine and can fly way up, up, up in her painted blue sky. The girl with the magical wings.
When I am all grown up I plan to be an artist. I plan to teach art and what it means to be yourself to kids who've had huge disadvantages in life. Kids like me. By then I hope the doctors can find a way to make me walk again, but if not, then that's ok. Cause I've learned to embrace my problem, for after all, my problem is what made me find myself. The girl not in the wheelchair, but the girl inside, the artist.
The girl who can fly when she can't even walk.
